You should run a virus scan daily.  Your software that you select to run the scan should have the ability to be set up to run each day at a pre-set time.  If you simply leave your computer on all the time, just schedule the scan for the middle of the night….or whenver you are least likely to using it.  Don’t forget to schdule an update of the definitions files daily, prior to running the virus scan.  There are many free spyware scans available.
